The amazing moon museum sculpture is now on display in Taunton Bath City News

A church in Taunton hosts a world-famous art installation. The Moon Museum artwork, designed by Luke Jerram, uses detailed NASA imagery to replicate the lunar surface, allowing people to explore the moon’s appearance in extraordinary detail.

The installation, which features comparative music by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones, has been enchanting audiences around the world since 2016, with residents of Sherborne and Wells experiencing it up close and personal. 2019 and 2021 respectively.

At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimeter of the internally lit spherical sculpture – which measures seven meters in diameter – represents 5 km of the moon’s surface. The artwork is now in place at St Mary Magdalene’s Church in the center of Taunton, which was recently given cathedral status by the Church of England.

It will be on display at the church until March 31. The installation was most recently in Somerset in late 2021, when it visited Wells Cathedral in October and November, then moved to Bath Cathedral as Christmas approached.

Audiences in Dorset had already had the chance to catch a glimpse of him during a brief residency at Sherborne Abbey in July 2019.

Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live art projects. Living in the UK but working internationally for 24 years, Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects that have thrilled and inspired people all over the world.

The Museum of the Moon was inspired by living in Bristol and noticing the huge variation in the tides as it traveled the Avon Cut each day. His research on the moon also led to his work Tide.

It is hoped the world-renowned art installation will help boost footfall in Taunton town centre.
