Royal Mint unveils £5 coin celebrating 120 years of Peter Rabbit UK News

The Royal Mint has launched a new colored £5 coin to mark 120 years since the first appearance of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit.

The famous rabbit is depicted in his signature blue coat jumping through a wildflower meadow on the commemorative coin launched today.

Ffion Gwillim, who designed the piece, said she used the original storybook illustrations as a reference to create the “joyful and festive” scene.

The new coin is available on the Royal Mint’s website in gold and silver as well as a “brilliant uncirculated” edition. It will not be released.

Speaking about the design, Ms Gwillim said: “As the piece is a celebration of The Tale Of Peter Rabbit, I knew from the start that I wanted the piece to be cheerful and have a festive feel.

“I was inspired by the colorful floral illustrations you see throughout the book.

“Taking the various floral elements from the pages of the book to create a new scene on a round coin was a welcome design challenge – applying color to such a detailed coin also required great care and precision.”

Royal Mint Commemorative Coins Director Clare Maclennan said: “Coins remain Britain’s favorite collector’s item.

“Their appeal continues to reach new collectors with the growing popularity of our Childhood Character Coins, which celebrate some of the greatest childhood stories and characters we know and love on official UK coins. .

“The collectable £5 Peter Rabbit Crown is the latest release in the series, marking the playful and lovable bunny’s 120th anniversary.

“Inspired by the original watercolor illustrations and available in a brightly colored special edition, the coin is itself a beautiful work of art for collectors of all ages, and we are thrilled to see these coins inspiring new ones. and young collectors to get involved.”
