One band to mention was Skinny Lister. That’s not to present Molly Manders and the Shut Up, or The Toasters in a negative light or anything; both were surprising and refreshing, but Skinny Lister stuck in my mind. They traditionally describe themselves as indie-folk or indie-rock and they proved it to the letter.

A plethora of instruments (including a double bass and accordion) awaited eager concertgoers to wow them, and Skinny Lister was no slouch; it wasn’t their first time playing Leeds, after all, so they knew how to work the crowd and warm them up for the ever-youthful Less Than Jake.

Those guys haven’t crossed the pond in two years, as they were very keen to remind everyone, and even protested emphatically that they had spent most of the pandemic practicing for this tour. To be honest, I’ve watched a few videos online of bassist Roger Lima over the last couple years, wishing you’d all come back to grace our pleasant shores with lots of fun and frivolity, and help me shift a couple of lockdown pounds through dancing. . , skanking and sweating all night.

Less Than Jake are known for their music, energy, and great performances, but they forgot how fun it was to go see them. From makeshift signs, outfits, and toilet paper rolls to a group of people with folklore challenges from the crowd who took the stage to be impromptu backing dancers, and then to a very young audience member onstage who went berserk. dancing while performing a couple of tracks – what a memory for that kid to grow up.

Aside from their usual list of hit after hit after hit, they played a couple of songs from their latest album, Silver Linings, that were just as good as the songs on Hello Rockview, Anthem and GNVFLA; they still have it! If you have the opportunity to see them on this tour, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
