Extinction Rebellion launched a new round of protests on Saturday to demand that the government stop further investment in the fossil fuel industry. The environmental group pledged to ‘flood the streets of London’ as campaigners warned they planned to be ‘very disruptive’ and cause massive disruption in London until April 17. Commenting on the first round of protests, Ms Akua said: “There are three things that are obvious keys to their demands at the moment.

“And on top of that there’s a cost of living crisis which means prices are skyrocketing.”
She continued, “If people are unable to heat their homes and feed their families, they all perish long before the end of the world.
“When you look closer, a lot of those protesting are white, middle class, none of them seem to go to work and have way too much free time.
“Try living the life of someone who has to choose between food and warmth. Or a single parent struggling to make ends meet instead of proclaiming the end of the world is near.”

The Metropolitan Police said protesters caused severe traffic disruption on Oxford Street and Regent Street on Saturday.
The force tweeted: “A number of protesters in Oxford St. & Regent St. are sitting in the road blocking traffic in both directions. Traffic diversions are in place.”
A member of the public who only wanted to be named Steve C, 50, from Ealing, west London, said Extinction Rebellion’s tactics were “obsessive”.
He told PA: “The tactic has given the Conservative Party an excuse to reduce and take away all our rights to protest.
“They block roads daily and repeatedly, whether in small or large numbers. They have prevented people from taking their children to school, they have prevented people from going to work and to appointments. you in the hospital. This is simply unacceptable.”
Mr C added that the protesters, whom he called ‘the least diverse crowd you’ve ever seen in London’, were made up of ‘good-natured white middle-class liberals (who) do not represent the City of London “.

But Sunita Ramani, who works in environmental communications and joined the first London protest, said the action was warranted.
Miss Ramani said: “It is absolutely not our intention to annoy people and disrupt their lives, but looking through history, civil disobedience has proven to be the most effective way for people to can pull off moves like this.
“We do this on behalf of all who deserve a livable future filled with justice.”
Extinction Rebellion billed the protest as part of “the final momentum of the plan to end fossil fuels”.
The group said a similar action to block “areas of the city for as long as possible” is planned every day for a week or more.
The group pledged that “our disruption will not stop until the fossil fuel economy is over.”
