Edgware man, 54, ‘made 15-year-old woman pregnant’ UK News

DNA evidence revealed a 54-year-old man had impregnated a 15-year-old girl, although he denied having had sex, a court heard.

Jawwad Akram of Edgware denies having sex with a child and facilitating another person’s journey for exploitation between August and October 2021.

Harrow Crown Court heard on Tuesday that Akram repeatedly denied having sex with the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, after his initial arrest.

The court heard that the girl later found out she was pregnant and after having an abortion, DNA analysis showed Akram to be the biological father.

Jurors previously heard the 15-year-old first disappeared in August after her family refused to allow Akram to marry her.

The defendant reportedly took her to a rented flat in Dundee, Scotland and the girl’s mother did not know her daughter’s whereabouts until more than a month later.

In September, staff at a London hotel called the police after they became concerned about the age difference between Akram and the girl when they checked in.

Akram was arrested and released on bail on the condition that he not contact the girl, who was placed in foster care the following day.

The girl then disappeared from her foster family’s home in Kent in October and Akram is said to have made arrangements to bring the girl back to Scotland.

He was arrested at his home in Edgware a few days later and the girl was found safe in a flat in Dundee the following day.

Akram denied having sex with the girl during his first interview with police in September.

In a transcript of the interview, read aloud in court, he repeatedly answered “no” to questions about whether they had ever had sex or whether she stayed at his house.

Akram, who is married, said, “It’s against my religion, I didn’t do this. It’s only allowed for my wife.

The prosecutor said after the DNA evidence was discovered, the defendant admitted having sex with the girl, but said he believed she was over 16.

The trial continues.
