August bank holiday weekend: here are 7 affordable family activities UK News

Summer vacation is coming to an end, but you might want to spend this holiday weekend doing the last fun stuff with your kids.

OVO Energy has combined eight affordable and sustainable activities for the enjoyment of the whole family.

Picking berries

This activity encourages kids to get out of the house, make healthier choices, and cut down on your fruit’s food miles if you visit a local fruit farm.

Go for a bike ride

Spend time biking in your area. You can even have a picnic and find a quiet place to grab a bite to eat.

Fight with a water sponge, not a water bomb

Sometimes a water fight is just what you need to cool off in the summer. By replacing the balloons with sponges, you will help the environment. Balloons often end up in the ocean and animals mistake them for food.

OVO Energy recommends that you try cutting old sponges into pieces and tying them up with twine for a different approach to traditional water bomb fighting.

Arts and crafts using unwanted household items

If you want to spend a day indoors, why not search your house for unwanted items that can be used for crafts? You could perhaps make a pencil holder from an old roll of toilet paper, or use an old cereal box as the basis for a new board game.

Treasure hunt in the woods

Before going for a walk, make a list of things you would like to discover while on the go. See if your kids can spot a butterfly or a dandelion and they can tick it off their list as they go.

Try growing your own green vegetables

While planting your own fruits and vegetables is good for the environment, it’s another way to encourage your kids to make healthier choices. OVO recommends using a peat-free compost to further help the environment.

Turn plastic containers and bottles into bird feeders

Why not use your used plastic bottles, yoghurt pots and milk cartons by turning them into feeders for the birds that visit your garden? All you have to do is poke holes in your plastic containers, tie some string to them, and choose a tree to hang it on. Your kids can spend time crafting and then bird watching in their own backyard.
