A new branch planned for short-haul flights to Gatwick will offer “the same level of comprehensive service” that is currently provided to passengers, according to British Airways.
The airline’s plan is to restart domestic and European flights from West Sussex airport, but will only do so if it has “a competitive and sustainable operating cost base”.
British Airways had suspended these flights due to the coronavirus pandemic.
These types of flights weren’t a profitable part of his business, even before the virus hit, and he warned the competitive industry would be “even more difficult” to navigate once the pandemic is over.
It is currently in negotiations with the unions on the remuneration and conditions of the staff working for the subsidiary, which it hopes to launch in the summer of 2022.
British Airways hopes for service
British Airways said in a statement to the PA News Agency that: “From a customer experience perspective, the new airline will carry the British Airways brand and customers will continue to enjoy the same level of comprehensive service as that they are currently receiving from us, as well as competitive rates. . ”
The new activity would involve up to 17 Gatwick-based Airbus A320s in the summer of 2022, with more to be added based on demand over the following three to four years.
Earlier this week Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary claimed Gatwick would be “the last airport” a company would have to choose to launch a London-based low-cost airline.
Speaking to the PA news agency, Mr O’Leary referred to previous failed attempts by British Airways to operate budget subsidiaries.
He said, “BA is the very definition of insanity. This would be the fifth or sixth attempt to create a low cost airline, usually concentrated around Gatwick.
“They tried Go, they had BA Express, BA Connect. It never worked.
